This is a really interesting and well organized journal on visual communication and on social media! I especially found Entry 6 on memes very relatable - it is amazing how a simple image combined with a couple of words would be able to go viral and shape entire conversations about politics, culture and social issues almost overnight. Memes are some of the best examples of how visual communication has changed since traditional advertising and news mediums.I also agree very much with Entry 9 on visual literacy. In today's world, we are constantly flooded with images, videos and graphics on sites such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Without the ability to critically analyse what we are seeing, it is very easy to be manipulated by misleading advertisements, political propaganda or unrealistic beauty standards.
ReplyDeleteAs Hall (1997) reminds us, images are never neutral - they always possess cultural meaning and dynamics of power which we need to learn to question as well as One thing I would like to add to this journal is a discussion regarding the negative impact of visual communication on mental health and how this especially affects young people. Research shows that never-ending exposure to edited and filtered images of 'perfect' lifestyles can cause anxiety, low self-esteem and social comparison. This has a direct link to Entry 2 on visual identity - whilst social media is empowering people to express themselves, it can also bring with it enormous pressures to put out a curated and unrealistic version of life. Moreover, this journal does a great job of linking visual communication theory to the digital world. Great work!
